Announcing – DMBLGIT Jan 2012

in Photography

It’s a new year, everyone has new goals, how about entering one of my favorite photography food blogging competitions?

I am honored to announce that I am hosting DMBLGIT (Does My Blog Look Good in This) this month!  This has been one of my favorite food photography contests ever since I can remember falling in love with food blogging and photography online, and I’m so excited to announce it and this month and help to continue its awesomeness.  It’s the longest running online food photography contest, dating back to 2005, each month showcasing a wealth of talent from food bloggers all over the web, conceived by Andrew of Spittoon Extra.

The rules are simple – enter your photo by the deadline, and an amazing lineup of judges that I have chosen this month (who will be revealed later this month) will judge the photos and choose the winners, who will receive pretty shiny badges to put on their site :)

Details below:

Entry Rules:
– Only one food/drink photograph may be entered per person.
– The photograph must have been taken by you.
– The photograph must not have any text or watermarks.
– The photograph must have been posted on your blog between December 1st through December 31st, 2011.
– The deadline to submit your entry is January 20th, 2012 at midnight your local time.

A panel of awesome judges has been chosen, who will decide 6 winners based on the following criteria:

  • Aesthetics: composition, food styling, lighting, focus, etc.
  • Edibility: does the photo make us want to dive right into the food?
  • Originality: a photo that instantly catches our attention and makes us stop to look twice, and exclaim “Wow!”

Three overall winners will be selected plus one each from the 3 categories. Apart from this, one photo that stands out, but wasn’t selected as a winning one will also be chosen by me, the hostess.

To enter DMBLGiT January 2012:
Email me one qualifying food/drink photograph with “DMBLGiT” as the subject line to jenncuisine at
Please remember that your email must include the following information:
– Your name
– Your blog’s name and URL
– The title of your photograph
– The URL of the post containing the photograph
– The camera and lens used by you
– Your location
– An attachment of a single qualifying food or drink photo you’d like to send as your entry. It should be without any text/watermark and not more than 500 pixels in width

*Please note that by submitting a photo, entrants agree to their photo being redisplayed and altered in size on the host’s page, the below linked picasa album and on the SpittoonExtra DMBLGiT page.

DMBLGiT January 2012 Gallery:
The photographs sent to me will be added to this DMBLGIT January 2012 Picassa album as and when I receive them. Please leave me a comment on this post if I mistakenly miss out anyone’s photograph and you don’t see yours posted within 72 hours. Keep checking the album to be updated on all of the wonderful entries!

You can check out the beautiful photos clicked by last month’s winners at My Saffron Kitchen, the host of the December 2011 edition. If you’re interested in hosting a future edition of DMBLGiT, send an email to Andrew with “DMBLGiT Host” as the subject line.

If you have any questions about the contest then leave a comment here or contact me. I look forward to your wonderful photographs. So, don’t wait, start sending them now and spread the word! You have until the 20th of January, 2012. On February 1st, 2012 I will be announcing the winners for this month.

Good luck everyone!

oh goshness, I didn’t post much in december – does anything from my mag count? (tee hee hee)

Jenn January 8, 2012 at 10:27 am

Honestly I’m not sure – I’m emailing Andrew, the administrator of the contest, to see what he says :)

Irina January 8, 2012 at 10:36 am

I really want to participate in the contest but my blog is not in English. Is that a problem?

Best wishes,

Jenn January 8, 2012 at 10:39 am

Definitely not a problem at all!

Irina January 8, 2012 at 10:42 am

Thank you!

Julie January 8, 2012 at 10:57 am

What a great idea to host this competition Jenn. My blog has not not been purely focused on food, but I will certainly keep this in mind for the next time around. Have fun with it and I’ll check back to see the results. Cheers!

Jenn January 8, 2012 at 2:51 pm

Thanks! And I’ll be sure to mention next month’s host when I post the results – you can also find the hosting schedule on Andrew’s site Spittoon Extra –

Simone January 8, 2012 at 11:10 am

I didn’t even know it was running for so long already. Like I said one of my resolutions for this year ( goal rather) is to participate too. Can’t wait to see all the entries!

Jenn January 8, 2012 at 11:18 am

Me too, I’m so excited!

Irina January 8, 2012 at 11:12 am

Hi again,
I just sent you my photo, but I wanted to say that you have missed a letter in your e-mail and if someone copies it from this post, it wouldn’t be able to send you an e-mail.

Have a great day! :)

Jenn January 8, 2012 at 11:18 am

Oh thanks!! And thanks for catching that, it should be fixed now :)

Rosa January 8, 2012 at 11:14 am

That is great! I’ll see if I find a picture worthy of the competition…

Jenn January 8, 2012 at 11:18 am

Thanks Rosa! Yes please enter!

Wendy L. Kirby January 8, 2012 at 2:32 pm

I would love to enter but December was pretty light for me. I’ll aim to enter next month.

Jenn January 8, 2012 at 2:48 pm

Next time then!

Wendy L. Kirby January 8, 2012 at 4:22 pm

Jenn I was so excited to find out about this contest through your site that I signed up to host for April. So glad I caught your post. Look forward to hosting it!

Jonathan January 8, 2012 at 5:45 pm

This is a fabulous idea! Frankly, it scares me quite a bit, as I’m someone who takes pictures of food, but I certainly wouldn’t think of myself as a photographer. But then again, we need to do at least one thing a day that scares us, so I’m going to make this one of them. :)

Jenn January 8, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Thanks Jonathan! Sounds like a great way to start :)

AmandaonMaui January 9, 2012 at 1:31 am

Oh gosh, I’d never win. However, I wish the rest of you much luck.

Jenn January 9, 2012 at 7:51 am

Thanks Amanda :)

Elaina @ Flavour January 9, 2012 at 3:39 am

What a great contest, I shall send you something from my December posts! Thanks for hosting Jenn :)

Jenn January 9, 2012 at 7:54 am

Great thanks!

Anita Menon January 9, 2012 at 10:08 am

I have started to follow this contest only for a few months now and I love to see how the judges choose a winner in each category. I always felt like participating but never felt I had the right wherewithal to do so. But this time I feel like giving it a shot and see where I stand. Hoping that you won’t reject any photos like other photography websites. :-)

Happy hosting.

Jenn January 9, 2012 at 7:25 pm

Great! Everyone with a food photo on their blog is allowed to enter :)

Anita Menon January 9, 2012 at 8:55 pm

I have sent you an email with my image. Thanks so much, Jenn.

Lisa January 9, 2012 at 11:11 am

One day I will have natural light…then I will upgrade my camera and food style my photos. Then, and ONLY then, will I even consider entering 😉

Jenn January 9, 2012 at 7:26 pm

Aww, next time!

InTolerantChef January 9, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Sounds fun, but all my photos are blurring just now with my arms in slings and casts :(

Jenn January 9, 2012 at 7:26 pm

Aww…. hope you are better soon!

Nicole, RD January 9, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Love this! I just sent in a submission!

Jenn January 9, 2012 at 7:27 pm

Yay!! Thanks for entering!

Brooke (Crackers on the Couch) January 9, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Wow. Looking though the submissions is just amazing! Every photo is beyond beautiful! You guys have your work cut out for you this month! :)

Jenn January 9, 2012 at 7:27 pm

I’m loving seeing all the submissions!

Cheoy Lee January 10, 2012 at 4:24 pm

Good luck judging this! Quite interesting to see all the good looking links as well.

Jenn January 10, 2012 at 11:16 pm

Kathryn Grace January 10, 2012 at 11:04 pm

I have mentioned this on several of the other contests before without getting any insightful answers. :-) I’m curious if you know or could find out why the photos have to be watermark free. Personally I don’t find it detracts from the photo and I know a lot of bloggers like to have their photos watermarked.
I’ll be entering, though looking at the entries already sent in I don’t think I have a chance! So many great photos!

Jenn January 10, 2012 at 11:16 pm

You would have to ask Andrew of Spittoon Extrza, but I believe it is because everyone has different watermarks of differing degrees of visibility/size, so it’s hard to standardize what is acceptable/what is too distracting for a judge to assess the photo. I could be wrong though…

Priscilla-She's Cookin' January 12, 2012 at 10:32 pm

Love looking at all the gorgeous photos, but don’t feel like I’m ready to submit just yet. Great contest and good luck to everyone who enters :)

Jenn January 17, 2012 at 6:49 pm

Thanks Priscilla – glad you changed your mind :)

Kita January 15, 2012 at 8:52 pm
