Last weekend, on my trip to Torino, Italy, I went for a photography lesson under the instruction of Dario Milano of Food Pixels to thrust myself into the world of supplemental lighting and props – and what an enlightening and eye opening experience it was! I had long admired Dario’s work – his food photography blog and the goldmine of advice therein have been so instrumental in my own growth so far, I really could think of no one else I’d rather learn about lighting from. Dario introduced me to the whole concept of incorporating supplemental lighting (specifically flash) into a food photo shoot.

I was never a picky eater when I was young.  My parents never had a problem with me not joining the “clean plate club” for dinner – meat, veggies, fruit, dairy, never ever an issue. Well, almost – I couldn’t stand mayonnaise, ketchup, or cooked carrots.  The mayonnaise I’ve gotten over now that I learned […]

Grapefruits are seriously underrated. I’ll admit, I too am guilty of not giving them a 2nd glance, because I had always associated them with something tart and bitter where the only possible way to make it the remotest bit palatable was to douse the entire fruit in spoonfuls of sugar. But my husband loves all […]

Ha, I told you we’ve been loving salads lately!  I’ve been all about “no cook” these days, and so when our friends organized a potluck picnic in the park yesterday I thought a flavorful salad would be the perfect dish to bring (so did everyone else, we had a lot of salads – just goes […]

Grateful for love and strawberries.

Strawberries aren’t in season en Suisse.  I’d gather they won’t be for at least a month yet.  But when these little red darlings started showing up in le marché, I could hardly resist.  I’ve been going through strawberry withdrawl ever since…. oh wait I couldn’t resist during Valentine’s either when I made my husband sabayon […]

Vegetarian Southwest Chickpea Salad

Lately we’ve been eating several salads for lunch and/or dinners – not ones that are just lettuce on a plate with a bit of dressing, but with every vegetable we can find – often good for those “clean out your fridge” meals. I particularly like using beans in salads, because it keeps the meal filling and adds a bit more of a weighty feel to the dish. This particular one took advantage of the last of our chipotle peppers and our newfound southwest herb rub, made into a simple sour cream based dressing. Simple and easy, and best of all no cooking required.
