New Starbucks Gluten Free Valencia Orange Cake!

Today was the first day that Starbucks officially unveiled their first gluten free pastry – Valencia Orange Cake.  So of COURSE my husband and I had to rush down this morning and enjoy a gluten free breakfast at Starbucks and try it out.  The verdict? It’s awesome!!

When you order it, the cake comes in an individually wrapped container – this is so that there is no risk of cross contamination with their other gluten foods:

At just under 300 cal (which is still only a little over half of what their muffins typically run), this plus a latte makes a great breakfast.  The topping on the cake tastes a bit like an orange marmelade, and the cake is actually decently moist and the texture is amazingly like cake.  I really have to applaud the guys at Starbucks who developed this recipe, because it is a definite success, and even if you are not a gluten free person it’s a great cake.

It has just seven ingredients, that make it BOTH gluten and dairy free: eggs, Valencia orange pulp, almonds, sugar, orange peel, baking powder, and orange oil.  I’m still not sure if this is supposed to be for breakfast or dessert.  Maybe both! We both really enjoyed it this morning.  Though, my husband does think I’m a little ridiculous taking pictures of everything we eat.  See the look of “if you weren’t my wife, I’d think you were very odd indeed” on his face in this pic:

If you are gluten free, or if you want to try a really good orange cake, head over to Starbucks* and try it out!

*Disclaimer – I was NOT endorsed in any way to write this review, we both just really wanted to try it and it really is that fantastic :)
